Sacramento police arrest suspect in deadly shooting in Upper Land Park housing complex
Sacramento police homicide detectives arrested a man on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter in a deadly shooting last month at an affordable housing complex in Upper Land Park.
Dandre Antonio La Ortega, 33, of Sacramento, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of 52-year-old Sacramento resident Frederick Lamonte Williams, the Sacramento Police Department announced Friday.
Along with the involuntary manslaughter, La Ortega faces a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a gun. La Ortega was being held Friday at the Sacramento County Main Jail. His bail amount was set at $100,000, and he was scheduled to appear for his arraignment Friday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.
An involuntary manslaughter charge in California is a lesser homicide charge filed by prosecutors when they believe there’s evidence that shows a defendant committed an unlawful killing of a human being without malice during an unlawful act not a felony or a lawful act which might result in death or without due caution and circumspection.
The Sacramento Police Department has not released any details about how the fatal shooting unfolded a few weeks ago.
The shooting was reported about 4:45 p.m. at the Alder Grove housing complex near Ringgold and Marsh streets, just west of Muir Way.
Officers found a man, later identified as Williams, with at least one gunshot wound, police said. Medics took Williams to a hospital, where he died.
Police said at the time the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remained under investigation. On Friday, police said detectives, with help from “tremendous community support,” found and arrested La Ortega as the suspect in last month’s shooting.
