Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested two men Saturday, accused of trying to purchase gift cards with stolen credit card numbers at a local Target.

One, a 45-year-old, attempted to use 42 different card numbers. Another, a 31-year-old, attempted to use 48 separate card numbers. Most were declined, but transactions worth a total of $1,488 were processed.

Andy Cater, a detective with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office’s Organized Retail Crimes Task Force, said the suspects — identified by deputies as Chinese nationals — were using mobile pay applications like Apple Pay or Google Pay to attempt multiple credit card numbers at one time.

“This is something that is still fairly new to our area, but we are seeing it increase dramatically,” Cater said. Two other groups of people had tried the same method at that store on the same day, he said.
