Elk Grove police arrest estranged husband in double homicide investigation
Authorities announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting Monday of two people inside an Elk Grove home.
The Elk Grove Police Department said late Monday that Michael Diego, 39, was taken into custody at a hospital hours after the victims were found shot to death inside a residence near Eva Avenue and Adams Street, just south of Elk Grove Boulevard.
Detectives identified Diego as the estranged husband of the female victim, police said in a statement. He was expected to be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail once medically cleared. As of Tuesday morning, jail records did not show Diego in custody and the nature of his injuries were unknown.
He is expected to face two counts of murder, police said.
Officers responded to the home just before 11 a.m. Monday following reports of gunfire. Inside, they discovered a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the victims’ names. Earlier Monday, police said they had delayed announcing the homicides to notify the victims’ families and because the case remained “active and ongoing.”
Detectives have not disclosed a motive for the killings and continue to investigate.
Police urged those with information about the homicides to call the department’s dispatch at 916-714-5115 or leave an anonymous tip with Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
