3 shot, 1 trampled after shooting at Davis park. Suspect still sought, police say
The Davis Police Department on Saturday was searching for a suspect accused of shooting three people at a park, authorities said.
The incident occurred at Community Park in Davis at 201 E. 14th St., according to the Police Department and spokesman Lt. Dan Beckwith. There was a large gathering of people at the park where the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon. Large crowds were in the area as part of UC Davis campus and surrounding area’s annual Picnic Day celebration.
“The suspect is still outstanding and has yet to be identified,” Beckwith said, noting it’s unclear if there were multiple shooters.
Two of the victims were teenagers, Beckwith said in a news briefing. One was a Davis resident and another a Sacramento resident. The third victim is 24-years-old.
“We believe that the injuries are non-life threatening,” Beckwith said.
Police asked people to stay out of the area while a large contingent of officers continued to search for the suspect, Beckwith said. No details of the suspect have been released as investigators have received conflicting information about the suspect.
The Davis Police Department in an update posted to social media shortly after 5 p.m. said an additional victim was trampled. All four victims were taken to the hospital, police said. The Police Department post did not include information about the victims’ conditions.
Police patrolling the park heard gunshots just before 3 p.m., according to the update. UC Davis in an alert to the campus just before 3:30 p.m. advised people to avoid Community Park due to police activity, but said that there was “no credible threat to campus.” Davis Joint Unified School District on its website also urged people to avoid the Davis Senior High School campus, which is near the park.
Picnic Day has been a tradition in Davis since 1909 in what UC Davis calls the “crown jewel” event of its campus. It serves as the annual open house for the campus with some 70,000 attendees and includes a parade, battle of the bands, fashion show and student organization fair.
Police said additional neighboring law enforcement agencies were already in Davis at the time of the shooting because they were assisting with Picnic Day.
