Death of woman incarcerated at Sacramento County Jail under investigation
A woman incarcerated at the Sacramento County Main Jail was found unresponsive in her cell Wednesday night and pronounced dead later at a hospital, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.
About 10:20 p.m., deputies found the 32-year-old inmate unresponsive in her cell where she was being housed in the 7-East building of the downtown Sacramento jail.
She appeared to have suffered a medical emergency, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Sheriff’s officials said deputies removed the woman from her cell and attempted life-saving first-aid with help from nursing staff at the jail.
Medics from the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the jail and took her to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Sheriff’s officials said they will complete a inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and California law, and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the inmate’s cause of death and forward its findings.
The Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s name after her family has been notified.
