Cyclist, 76, dies days after being struck in Mangan Park, Sacramento police say

hit and run fatality

A 76-year-old bicyclist who was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash earlier this month in south Sacramento has died, authorities confirmed Monday.

Zhen Cheng Kuang of Sacramento died May 13, eight days after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle near the intersection of 24th Street and Fruitridge Road, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on May 5 in the city’s Mangan Park neighborhood. Kuang was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver fled the scene before officers arrived, the Sacramento Police Department said in a news release Monday.

Police detectives later arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in serious injury, police said. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail the same day and later released. A court file for the man did not appear in Sacramento Superior Court records Tuesday.

With Kuang’s death, police said Monday that the investigation remains ongoing. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect motorist could face additional charges in connection with the fatality.
