A man with seven dogs was arrested on Monday in Grass Valley on suspicion of animal cruelty and resisting arrest, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Animal control officers and deputies responded to the suspect’s house on the 1700 block of Greenhorn Road in Grass Valley to conduct a wellness check and investigate a reported dog-on-dog attack, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

One of the 48-year-old man’s eight dogs was found dead by deputies, who found the puppy had likely been deceased in the house “for some time,” according to the release. The man’s seven other dogs were seized by animal control officers.

The Sheriff’s Office said two of the dogs were outside the property when deputies arrived, one of which required medical attention after fighting with one of the other dogs living on the property.

According to the release, a mother dog and five puppies — one of which had died — were found living inside the house without proper sustenance which caused “needless suffering.”

“The residential conditions were found to be deplorable and covered in feces, urine and trash, and lacked water and food,” the release read.

The remaining seven dogs are currently located at the animal shelter Sammie’s Friends, according to the release. The Sheriff’s Office said people can call the shelter at 530-471-5041 if they wish to foster or adopt any of the dogs.
