A Sacramento-area high school coach and teacher arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor possession of child pornography and lewd and lascivious acts with a minor has been on leave from the campus since March, school officials announced Tuesday in a letter to families.

Brandon Robinson was arrested Monday by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail. Robinson, 37, posted bond and was freed from custody Tuesday ahead of an upcoming court date, according to jail records. Court records show he was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.

Rio Americano High School officials in the letter said they were notified of Robinson’s arrest on Tuesday.

“This is very concerning to all of us,” the school’s letter read in part. “Our staff cares deeply for each of our students, and their safety and well-being are always our top priority.”

Monday’s arrest of Robinson, the school’s varsity softball coach and a mathematics teacher at the Arden Arcade campus since 2020, came after a monthslong investigation into allegations that Robinson was having an inappropriate relationship with a teen student at the school, said Sheriff’s Office Det. Sina Ghaffarpour.

Sheriff’s detectives from the department’s sexual assault unit recovered unspecified “digital material” from Robinson during the investigation that led to the pornography charges and Robinson’s arrest, the detective said.

Robinson has been on leave from Rio Americano since March, school officials said in the letter. It is unclear whether Robinson’s leave from the school coincided with the allegations against him and the investigation that followed.

San Juan Unified School District officials on Wednesday would not comment on why Robinson was placed on leave, calling the action a “personnel matter.”

Ghaffarpour said his office’s investigation began “several months ago,” and immediately after learning of the allegations.

Robinson also coaches youth softball in Sacramento County, Ghaffarpour said.

“Additional victims are very possible,” the detective said. “If there are any, we would like for them to come forward.”

Rio Americano officials said all school employees “go through a thorough background check before starting their positions,” adding that the school “will continue to work in support of law enforcement’s investigation in this matter.”

School officials said families can reach out to its front office to be connected to support services for students and are asking anyone with concerns about inappropriate behavior to call the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115.
