The Sheriff’s Office arrested a man suspected of assault Saturday morning following a roughly four-hour standoff and evacuations in a northern Sacramento County neighborhood.

Just after 8 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to reports of vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon, which was a knife, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release on social media. They identified a suspect, evacuated nearby residents and attempted contact to contact the suspect.

Multiple other residents were inside the house, and the suspect, a 27-year-old man, refused to exit. He went on the roof and made threats to kill people and stab deputies, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Special Enforcement Detail — its SWAT team — and Critical Incident Negotiators responded, the news release said. Deputies attempted for hours to negotiate a peaceful surrender, which did not work.

“Faced with the need to keep the public safe, and provide rescue to the occupants inside the home, K9 Philbert was utilized, along with less lethal options, and the suspect was apprehended,” the release said.

The suspect was taken into custody before noon and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, after being medically cleared at a local hospital, on suspicion of charges including assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, criminal threats against his mother, vandalism and resisting arrest, the Sheriff’s Office said.
