Two suspects held after Folsom inmate’s prison death
A suspected homicide is under investigation at Folsom State Prison where a man died after an alleged attack by two other inmates Friday night.
Brian J. Diguez, 34, was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m. Friday after he was allegedly attacked less than an hour earlier by two inmates in the dayroom, where prison workers recovered two “inmate-manufactured” weapons, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation news release.
The incident was handled by prison staff who tried life-saving measures on Diguez and took him to the prison’s treatment area, authorities said, where he was pronounced dead by the Folsom Fire Department.
Prison officials suspect that Boris Bonilla, 48, and Carlos J. Duran, 32, were involved in the attack and have moved them to restricted housing amid an investigation by the prison’s investigative unit, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and county coroner, according to the news release.
Diguez had been in Folsom’s prison since July 2016 while serving a 21-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter with an enhancement of a street gang act in commission of a serious felony, authorities said.
Bonilla arrived in Folsom from Los Angeles County in May 2012. He received a life sentence with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder with a similar street-gang-act sentencing enhancement, authorities said.
Duran was sentenced to two years for a parole violation related to vehicle theft with prior vehicle-related theft convictions, authorities said.
