11-year-old shot at Florin Road apartment complex during neighbor dispute

Police tape at crime scene

A man who Sacramento County deputies say shot an 11-year-old child in the leg at a Florin Road apartment complex is behind bars, while the young victim is expected to survive the shooting.

A dispute between neighbors triggered the late-night gunfire Wednesday at the apartment complex in the 5600 block of Florin Road, said Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office in a posting to social media.

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies were called to the complex about 11:30 p.m., where they found and tended to the wounded youth before the 11-year-old was taken to the hospital, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies later arrested the suspected shooter, Roberto Guillermo Rangel, 25, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, and booked him into Sacramento County Main Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail, according to jail records. An arraignment date is scheduled for Aug. 11 in Sacramento Superior Court.

Sheriff’s officials said deputies learned Rangel, who lives at the complex, allegedly had been drinking throughout the day and was involved in several arguments with neighbors before the shooting.
