Man arrested after standoff at North Highlands gas station with Sheriff’s Office

Police tape blocks entrance to a convenience store in San Luis Obispo County.

A 40-year-old man was taken into custody early Monday after refusing to exit his vehicle during a standoff with Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies in North Highlands, authorities said.

Deputies located the man around 4 a.m. at Elkhorn Boulevard and Walerga Road, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman. The man had been sought in connection with a felony vandalism earlier in the night, Gandhi said.

The man, parked outside a 7-Eleven gas station, declined orders to get out of the vehicle and made statements about wanting to be shot by law enforcement, Gandhi said. The Sheriff’s Office’s Crisis Intervention Negotiation Team and SWAT team responded.

The store was evacuated as a precaution.

About 6:40 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail took the man into custody without incident, Gandhi said.

No injuries were reported.
