Man shot in head in Arden Arcade drive-by dies at hospital

Homicide investigation

A man shot in the head and gravely wounded in an Aug. 12 drive-by shooting died at a hospital, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, and his alleged gunman could now face a murder charge in the death.

Alleged shooter Jason Hankins, 46, has been held without bail at Sacramento County Main Jail since his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder in the shooting on Morse Avenue near Lerwick Way in Arden Arcade.

Homicide detectives called to the Morse Avenue shooting said the victim was sitting in the back of a car when he was shot about 12:15 p.m., Aug. 12. Deputies tended to the man before he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, the Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies said the man died over the weekend.

Sheriff’s detectives arrested Hankins on Wednesday, taking him into custody. Sheriff’s officials say Hankins tried to hide his vehicle and the alleged weapon before his arrest. Both vehicle and firearm were recovered, said the Sheriff’s Office.

Hankins is next scheduled to appear Aug. 25 in Sacramento Superior Court on what are expected to be amended allegations charging him with the man’s murder.
