Fatal crash on I-80 in Davis sparks CHP search for involved semi truck

hit and run fatality

A motorcyclist died early Tuesday in a crash with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 near Mace Boulevard, and California Highway Patrol officers were searching for a tractor-trailer believed to have struck the rider after the initial collision.

The crash was reported at 4:45 a.m. on eastbound I-80 west of Mace, according to the CHP Woodland office. Investigators said a Volvo big rig pulling trailers was traveling in the middle lane of a construction zone when a Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck the rear of the truck.

The impact ejected the motorcyclist into the lanes of traffic, where the rider was hit by another vehicle that did not stop, CHP officials said. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The Yolo County Coroner’s Office will release the rider’s name once family members are notified.

Officers initially sought a dump truck in connection with the crash, according to CHP dispatch logs, but the involved vehicle remains unidentified.

Investigators said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash. Eastbound lanes were shut down for several hours during the investigation, with the No. 1 lane reopening about 5:45 a.m.

CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle that struck the motorcyclist to call the Woodland office at 530-702-6250.
