A standoff with police at a downtown Sacramento residence hotel ended peacefully early Thursday with officers taking a man into custody.

Officers detained the man just after 5:20 a.m. at the Capitol Park Hotel building on the 1100 block of Ninth Street, said Sacramento Police Department officials.

The standoff began hours earlier, about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, with a report of an assault with a weapon and a man who had barricaded himself with a knife inside an apartment. Officers called in a police tactical team as well as crisis negotiators to try to coax the man to surrender, said department officials.

The circumstances mirrored an August standoff at the building. Police negotiated for more than five hours early Aug. 20 with a knife-wielding man who had barricaded himself in an apartment after an earlier assault. SWAT officers ultimately used tear gas to force him from the building.

The Capitol Park Hotel became permanent homeless housing in early 2024.
