A Sacramento County jury convicted a man for a violent home-invasion robbery four years ago when a man fought back against intruders, was shot twice and survived.

The jury on Oct. 2 found Lejon Dominic Mabon, 38, guilty of attempted murder, along with an enhancement for using a gun in the crime, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

The home-invasion robbery occurred Oct. 14, 2021. Prosecutors said Mabon and an unidentified accomplice forced their way into the home through a garage door.

The intruders entered the home’s master bedroom, where the victim and his girlfriend were sleeping in their bed. Prosecutors said Mabon hit the victim in the face, causing his eye to swell shut.

When the victim fought back, he suffered two gunshot wounds but survived his injuries, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The intruders then left the home.

Minutes later, Mabon was dropped off at a hospital with gunshot wounds. It’s unclear who fired the gun that wounded him.

Prosecutors said hospital security camera video showed Mabon wearing a camouflage jacket, the same jacket worn by a suspect seen removing a light bulb from the victim’s neighbor’s porch a few hours before the home-invasion robbery was committed.

Investigators collected the camouflage jacket at the hospital as evidence. Prosecutors said a DNA analysis of the jacket found traces of the victim’s DNA. A beanie found at the crime scene also had traces of Mabon’s DNA, according to the DA’s Office.

Mabon on Thursday remained in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 21 in Sacramento Superior Court.

Prosecutors said Mabon had three previous criminal convictions considered strikes under California’s “Three Strikes” law, and he faces a maximum sentence of 41 years to life in prison.
