A Sacramento Superior Court judge sentenced a man to 45 years and eight months to life in prison for sexually trafficking a 17-year-old girl, prosecutors said.

On Nov. 25 of last year, a jury found James Edward Floyd, 37, guilty of persuading a minor to engage in commercial sex acts with enhancement for using force, fear, fraud, deceit, coercion, violence, duress, menace or threat of injury, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday in a news release.

Prosecutors said Floyd was also convicted of pimping a minor older than 16 years old, two counts of taking the girl’s money from prostitution and two counts of pandering by encouraging the prostitution. Floyd had a previous first-degree burglary conviction that’s considered a strike under California’s “Three Strikes” law. Judge Jerome Price sentenced Floyd on Friday.

In January 2024, a detective with the Sacramento Police Department investigating sex trafficking of minors found digital evidence that suggested Floyd had sex trafficked the 17-year-old girl he met online, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said the police detective interviewed the girl, who said Floyd sexually exploited her by posting online prostitution advertisements that included photographs of her. She told the detective that Floyd took her to and from acts of commercial sex, giving her directions regarding prostitution.

The teenage girl gave Floyd the money that she made, and Floyd forcibly kept her in a house when she once tried to leave, according to the DA’s Office.

Prosecutors said Floyd continued to put the teenage girl on the street to engage in prostitution, and Floyd had previously sexually exploited two other victims.
