Police say pedestrian killed in Citrus Heights might have been walking against traffic signal

A man was hit and killed by a car in Citrus Heights on Sunday morning, possibly while walking in a crosswalk against the signal, authorities say.

The incident occurred at 5:13 a.m. at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Old Auburn Road, according to a Citrus Heights Police Department news release. The pedestrian, 28 years old, is believed to have been walking from the east to west side of Old Auburn Road during a “Don’t Walk” signal. He was struck by a vehicle being driven south on Sunrise Boulevard and died at the scene.

Neither alcohol nor speed appear to be a factor in the accident, police said, and the 58-year-old male driver has cooperated with investigators, the release states.

The victim’s name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The incident cause closure of the intersection, which was expected to be reopened later Sunday.
