Second fatal wreck in two weeks hits same roadway north of Woodland, CHP says
A head-on collision north of Woodland killed one person and injured three others late Sunday night, marking the second fatal crash in as many weeks along the same stretch of County Road 102.
The California Highway Patrol said officers responded around 10:20 p.m. to a report of a two-vehicle crash just south of County Road 16. Investigators determined that a southbound Acura veered into oncoming traffic and struck a Hyundai that was going northbound.
A passenger in the Acura died at the scene, according to the CHP’s Woodland office. The Acura’s driver, another passenger and the Hyundai driver suffered major injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals, authorities said.
Authorities said alcohol or drugs may have contributed to the collision, but the crash remains under investigation.
The site of Sunday’s wreck is less than a mile north of the rural intersection at County Road 102 and County Road 17, where a Knights Landing woman was killed in a crash on Oct. 23. In that incident, prosecutors allege a Woodland man ran a stop sign while intoxicated and slammed into an SUV, killing 71-year-old Estela Hernandez Vargas and seriously injuring her husband and son.
The driver in the earlier crash, 53-year-old Mario Navarro Dominguez, is charged with murder and DUI causing injury. Prosecutors say Dominguez has a history of drunken driving, including a 1992 vehicular homicide conviction in Washington state. He was also convicted twice in Yolo County for DUI in 2017 and 2023 and had been warned by judges that future offenses could lead to murder charges.
The victim was identified by Yolo County coroner’s officials as Alejando Naranjo Ibarra, 20, of Woodland.
