Employees at a McDonald’s in Galt helped officers arrest a San Joaquin County man suspected of carrying out a series of robberies Monday night at fast food restaurants in the area, police said.
Officers initially responded to a report of a robbery in progress at a Taco Bell on C Street in Galt, just west of Highway 99.
The Taco Bell employees told officers that a male suspect entered the restaurant, demanded money from the register and threatened to “shoot the place up” if his demands were not met, according to a Galt Police Department news release.
Police said security camera video at the Taco Bell investigation captured the robbery suspect wearing a white-plaid flannel shirt and blue jeans.
While officers were responding to the Taco Bell robbery, dispatchers received another report of a robbery in progress at a Carl’s Jr. in the same shopping center. Carl’s Jr. employees told officers the robbery suspect left in a gray van heading west.
Shortly after, officers responded to a report of a third robbery in progress at McDonald’s on Twin Cities Road, just east of Highway 99 and a few miles north of the other two fast-food restaurant robberies.
As officers were responding to the third Galt robbery, dispatchers told the officers that employees at the McDonald’s restaurant had physically detained the suspect, police said.
Officers arrived at the McDonald’s and took the suspect, later identified as a 30-year-old Lockeford man, into custody. Police said the man in custody was wearing the same clothing seen in the Taco Bell security camera video.
McDonald’s employees also told officers that they believed the same suspect had just committed a robbery at a McDonald’s in Lodi. Galt police said officers from the Lodi Police Department conducted an in-person identification in Galt and positively identified the individual as the suspect in the Lodi robbery.
The robbery suspect admitted to police that he committed the three Galt robberies, and a search revealed he had a substantial amount of cash, according to the Police Department.
Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of robbery, driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI while on court probation and driving with a suspended license for a DUI conviction.
The robbery suspect remained in custody Tuesday afternoon at the Sacramento County Main Jail. His bail was set at $1 million. He faces three felony counts of robbery and misdemeanor DUI charges, along with an infraction for driving under the influence while on probation, jail records show.
