A Sacramento Superior Court judge on Friday sentenced a Citrus Heights man to 25 years to life in prison for the death of his infant son.

A jury on Nov. 20 found Alexander Coffey, 27, guilty of second-degree murder and assault on a child and causing the death of his 7-month-old son, Greyson Sean Coffey, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Kenneth Brody sentenced Coffey on Friday afternoon.

The incident that led to the child’s death occurred Nov. 11, 2023, when Coffey was home alone with his son.

Prosecutors said Coffey woke up angry about 1:15 a.m. that day, and he later admitted to police that she shook the infant “really hard and fast.” Greyson suffered fatal injuries.

Sacramento County Coroner’s Office records show the child died four days later. Prosecutors said Greyson’s brain and spine injuries were worse than are seen in most car crash victims.

On Monday afternoon, Coffey remained in custody at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center near Elk Grove awaiting a transfer to a prison.
