Man arrested after 5-hour standoff, threatening mother, Winters police say

A Winters man accused of threatening to shoot his mother during a five-hour standoff with police was arrested Saturday night.

At 6:24 p.m., the Winters Police Department in Yolo County responded to a report that a 34-year-old man was waving a handgun at his mother at a home on the 500 block of East Street.

The man surrendered late in the evening and Winters police officers arrested and booked him at Yolo County Jail for felony criminal threats, resisting arrest, being in possession of ammunition as a convicted felon and a misdemeanor for “brandishing an imitation firearm,” according to a news release.

Winters police officers were called by the brother of the man and met with the mother away from the scene, authorities stated. After consulting with officers, the mother confirmed she was threatened, and authorities later confirmed two family members were alone in the home with the man, according to police.

When Winters police and Yolo Sheriff’s Office personnel arrived to the residence, the man refused to leave the home and instead was “uncooperative (and) acting erratically,” according to the press release. The man’s family told officers they believed he was under “the influence of controlled substances.” The family verified that the man had a handgun and ammunition days prior, having barricaded his living space inside the home.

Officers were able to contact the man over the phone but he was uncooperative and said “he would not be taken into custody and challenged law enforcement to come into the residence,” the release said.

Winters police made “numerous attempts” to get the man to peacefully surrender and ultimately the Yolo County SWAT team used “flashbang diversionary devices” and tear gas, the news release stated.

At approximately 11:17 p.m., the man surrendered but was physically resistant while being put into custody and spit on Winters officers, the release said. Upon searching the man’s residence, police found a BB gun, an airsoft gun, a replica of a Glock and live ammunition in the man’s living space.
