Detectives arrested a man on suspicion of homicide in the shooting death of a man who was struck by gunfire this past weekend in Sacramento.

The shooting was reported shortly after 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 900 block of Eleanor Avenue, just northwest of Del Paso Boulevard in the Old North Sacramento neighborhood.

Officers arrived at the shooting scene and found the wounded, later identified as Brooks, who had suffered at least one gunshot wound, according the Sacramento Police Department.

Police said officers provided emergency medical aid for Brooks until medics arrived. Brooks was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the fatal shooting investigation, which included collecting evidence at the scene and questioning witnesses.

On Tuesday, police announced that the detectives identified Lara as the suspect in this homicide and arrested him with help from the department’s specialty units.

Along with the homicide charge, Lara faces a charge of attempted homicide, jail records show. The Police Department has not indicated that anyone else at the scene was struck by gunfire and wounded in the shooting.

Lara is scheduled to appear for his arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.
