Police tape at crime scene

Police fatally shot a bank robbery suspect Thursday afternoon after a foot pursuit in the Point West neighborhood near Cal Expo, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about six minutes after a robbery was reported at 4:22 p.m. at the BMO bank branch in the 1600 block of Response Road near Challenger Way, according to police statements, radio traffic and witnesses close to where the officer-involved shooting occurred, about a quarter-mile south of Arden Fair mall.

Sacramento police said patrol officers responding to the robbery spotted a man matching the suspect’s description running toward Exposition Parkway while armed with what appeared to be a firearm.

“Officers pursued the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a statement.

According to police, two Sacramento officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect. Officers attempted life-saving procedures before firefighters took the man to a hospital, police said, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured, police said.

“Officers recovered what was later determined to be an imitation firearm on scene,” police said.

Thursday’s incident was the first officer-involved shooting by the Police Department of the year and the first since July, when officers opened fire on a sword-wielding suspect who threaten to kill his friend. The man was treated for his wounds before being arrested and charged for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and resisting arrest, police said. The man was not identified by authorities.

Thursday’s shooting was under investigation by the Police Department’s homicide unit, Internal Affairs Division and Professional Standards Unit; the agency’s Force Investigation Team will conduct a separate examination for policy, tactics and training related to the use of force, police said. The department added that the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the city’s Office of Public Safety Accountability would monitor the investigation.

The identity of the man who died was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. Police said that footage of the incident would be released in the next month in accordance with city policy and state law.
