Search for inmate who walked away from firefighting camp in El Dorado County
An inmate serving a 10-year sentence for first-degree burglary walked away from a state prison work camp Monday night in El Dorado County, state officials said.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said staff at Growlersburg Conservation Camp discovered Juan David Veramancini, 49, was missing during a head count around 8 p.m. The work camp, run by CDCR and Cal Fire, is about a mile and a half west of Georgetown along Reservoir Road.
After confirming Veramancini was gone, officials launched a search, CDCR officials said in a statement.
Authorities said that Veramancini was last seen wearing an orange beanie and orange jacket. He may also be wearing orange pants or gray sweatpants with white tennis shoes or black boots. He is 5-foot-5 and 152 pounds with brown eyes. He is currently bald but typically has black hair.
Veramancini was convicted in 2024 of first-degree burglary at a Newport Beach home, according to court documents.
The 80-acre Growlersburg camp, which opened in 1967, is run by the two state agencies to support emergency response and recovery for incidents such as wildfires and trains low-level, non-violent offenders to serve on fire crews, according to CDCR.
Anyone who has seen Veramancini or knows of his whereabouts is urged to call 911, any law enforcement agency or CDCR Special Agent Tim Keeney at 916-210-9159.
