Authorities ID Camino man, 66, who wounded PG&E worker, sheriff’s deputies

Police tape blocks entrance to a convenience store in San Luis Obispo County.

El Dorado County authorities have identified the man accused of shooting a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. contractor in Camino and two sheriff’s deputies who engaged him in a shootout before his arrest.

Steven Carter, 66, of Camino, remained in custody at a hospital in stable condition. He was wounded in the exchange of gunfire with the two deputies March 12, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The deputies also were recovering at a hospital. Sheriff’s officials said the two, identified as J. Stillman and C. Remiche, “are in good spirits despite their injuries, and both are extremely thankful for the outpouring of support from the community.”

The deputies had responded to the shooting and were also wounded. Carter was wounded during the exchange with deputies. The PG&E crew member was taken by air ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The crew member was released March 12, sheriff’s officials said.

“This work already comes with great risks and can be life-threatening,” said Bob Dean, business manager for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1245, the union that represents the wounded lineman. “No worker should ever have to worry about violence from the very people they are there to help.”

The wounded PG&E contractor was part of a crew working at a home on Mountain View Drive in Camino on March 12 when they were fired upon about 7:30 a.m., according to sheriff’s officials.
