Thursday will mark two months since an inmate walked away from a firefighting camp in El Dorado County. He remains at large.

Juan David Veramancini, 49, walked off the Growlersburg Conservation Camp near Georgetown on Feb. 23, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Corrections officials said the inmate was missing during a head count around 8 p.m. that evening.

Veramancini was convicted of first-degree burglary in 2024, according to previous Bee reporting.

At the time of his escape, corrections officials said he may have been wearing an orange beanie and orange jacket. He was bald but naturally had black hair.

Another inmate, Jose Zamora, tried to escape the facility earlier this month, according to CDCR. He was apprehended “minutes after” he walked off the site.

Veramancini and Zamora are two of six inmates to escape the facility in the past five years, according to CDCR spokesperson Mary Ximenez. Veramancini is the only escapee not apprehended.

The firefighting camp helps support emergency response for incidents such as wildfires by training and deploying low-level, nonviolent offenders.

Those with information about Veramancini and his whereabouts can call 911, any law enforcement agency or CDCR special agent Tim Keeny at 916-210-9159.
