Suspect arrested in two south Sacramento smash-and-grab burglaries, police say

A suspect was arrested in connection with two smash-and-grab burglaries at south Sacramento businesses early Wednesday, police said.

Officers first responded just before 3:45 a.m. to the 7100 block of 24th Street in the Golf Course Terrace neighborhood after reports a vehicle crashed into a business, Sacramento police spokesperson Officer Allison Smith said. Investigators determined a vehicle had been driven through the front door of Wayne’s Wok Chinese restaurant.

Less than an hour later, about 4:30 a.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of Meadowview Road in the Meadowview neighborhood after a burglar alarm sounded. At that location, officers found a vehicle had also been driven into a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop and documented a second burglary, Smith said.

The two businesses are about 1½ miles apart.

“Through the quick utilization of our public safety camera network, officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle involved in both of these burglaries,” Smith said.

California Highway Patrol officers later located the vehicle and detained the suspect after a brief pursuit, Smith said.

“Through the swift and diligent follow-up investigation by our burglary detectives, the suspect was arrested for both burglaries,” Smith said.

The suspect — identified as a 20-year-old Sacramento resident — was expected to be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail after being medically cleared from a hospital.

Smith said the man did not suffer injuries after crashing his car while being chased but was taken to a hospital to be evaluated.
