Sacramento officer bitten by West Sacramento police K-9 during pursuit of suspect

Police tape at crime scene

A Sacramento police officer was bitten by a West Sacramento Police Department K-9 early Wednesday while officers searched for a suspect who fled from a U-Haul truck, authorities said.

Sacramento police officers spotted a reckless driver in a U-Haul rental truck near 24th Street and 68th Avenue about 2:45 a.m., Sacramento police spokesperson Officer Anthony Gamble said.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the occupants abandoned the truck near 24th Street and 51st Avenue and ran, jumping fences as they tried to escape, Gamble said.

Police established a perimeter and requested assistance from the West Sacramento Police Department K-9 unit. During the search, the police dog bit a Sacramento officer.

“The officer sustained a dog bite and has been transported to an area hospital for treatment,” Gamble said.

Police did not immediately release details about the officer’s condition.

Officers arrested Jesus Roberto Aguilar, 20, of Sacramento.

Aguilar was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of evading a peace officer by driving against traffic, possession of burglar’s tools, hit-and-run causing property damage and resisting an officer.

He was also booked on fresh charges of felony vandalism, battery against a former dating partner and willful disobedience of a court order.

In addition, Aguilar was arrested on a no-bail felony warrant in a 2024 burglary case, according to jail records.

Because of the no-bail warrant, Aguilar was ineligible for release pending his arraignment, which is scheduled for Friday in Sacramento Superior Court.
