Police schedule drunken driving checkpoint Friday in city of Sacramento

Sacramento police have scheduled a drunken driving checkpoint Friday night somewhere in the city, officers said.

The checkpoint will be set up within the city from 8 p.m. Friday, May 15, to 1 a.m. Saturday, May 16.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on the number of crashes involving impaired drivers, police said.

Police noted that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs also may interfere with driving. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal as well.

Motorists who are charged with a first time DUI offense face fines and penalties of $13,500 on average, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

DUI checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
