Will charges be filed for Sacramento sheriff’s detective accused of DUI?

Two days after a Sacramento County sheriff’s detective was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence amid a six-vehicle crash, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office says further investigation is necessary.

The DA’s Office said it received the case Thursday morning, but would like more information about the injuries victims suffered in the Rancho Cordova incident before filing charges.

“Our office did a thorough review of all the evidence currently submitted,” the DA’s Office wrote in a statement. “To determine whether felony or misdemeanor charges should be filed, further investigation is needed to ascertain the extent of the victims’ injuries.”

Detective Richard Hamilton was booked Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury after the crash, which was reported about 4:15 p.m. at Douglas Road and Sunrise Boulevard, according to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office booking records.

“This conduct does not reflect the values or standards of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Ed Igoe said at the time.

The DA’s office said it plans to hold everyone accountable.

“The Sacramento District Attorney’s Office takes driving under the influence cases very seriously, and we will hold everyone accountable for their actions,” the DA’s Office wrote in a statement.
