Trash can no refuge for suspect who stole car in Butte County, deputies say

Butte County law enforcement officials arrested a suspect Monday on suspicion of vehicle theft, resisting arrest and vandalism.

According to a Butte County Sheriff’s Office news release, deputies responded at 8:17 a.m. to a report of a stolen vehicle at a residence on Co Co Lane in Palermo. Investigators said the vehicle had been driven through a detached garage door before the suspect fled the area.

Officials identified the suspect as a 28-year-old resident of Palermo.

Shortly after 9 a.m., deputies with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office located the suspect driving south on Highway 99 and attempted a traffic stop. Authorities said the suspect led deputies on a pursuit before striking a curb, then ran from the vehicle on foot.

Deputies later found the suspect hiding in a nearby trash can.

According to deputies, the suspect struggled briefly with deputies before a nearby civilian helped officers take him into custody.

The suspect was booked into the Sutter County Jail on suspicion of evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, resisting an executive officer, possessing a stolen vehicle, vandalism and resisting a peace officer. He was expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Sutter Superior Court.

The investigation remained ongoing and additional charges may be filed, deputies said.
