Man, 48, arrested on gun charge after teen’s fatal shooting in North Sacramento
A 48-year-old Sacramento man has been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a felony firearm charge following the weekend fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in North Sacramento, but no homicide charges have been filed as the investigation continues, police said Wednesday.
The Sacramento Police Department said that following a “comprehensive investigation in coordination with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office,” detectives booked Rene Francisco Monjaras of Sacramento on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Jail records show Monjaras was arrested Monday; an arraignment in the case was not scheduled as of Wednesday afternoon.
Police previously announced Tuesday that Monjaras was a person of interest who had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
Detectives said the 16-year-old was shot shortly before 12:15 a.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of Taylor Street in the West Del Paso Heights neighborhood.
About 15 minutes later, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Wisconsin Avenue, about 1½ miles away, where they found the teen suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency medical aid until Sacramento Fire Department personnel arrived, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has not released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
Police said the homicide investigation remained ongoing. No murder-related charges have been announced.
