From a Walmart parking lot to Folsom Lake: Police track down hit-and-run driver
A driver accused of leaving the scene of a hit-and-run crash in a Roseville Walmart parking lot was located later that day while boating on Folsom Lake, according to the Roseville Police Department.
The incident occurred on June 26 at the Walmart store at 1400 Lead Hill Blvd. Police said a parked vehicle was struck by a Ford F-250 towing a boat.
Officials said the collision was forceful enough to push the unoccupied vehicle completely into the adjacent parking stall.
The vehicle’s owner discovered the damage upon returning to the parking lot and reported the incident to police.
Investigators reviewed Walmart surveillance footage, which police said captured the collision and showed the driver of the Ford F-250 inspecting the damage before leaving without providing the required information. Officers were able to identify the suspect vehicle using the license plates of both the truck and the boat trailer.
The investigation led officers to Folsom Lake, where they located the truck and trailer after determining the boat had already launched.
With assistance from California State Parks and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Roseville Police boarded a patrol boat and found the suspect operating the vessel on the lake. Police said the suspect was contacted after returning to shore, where officers completed their investigation.
The Roseville Police Department said the investigation showcases the partnerships they have with regional agencies.
“This case is a great example of the persistence and dedication our patrol officers bring to every investigation, no matter where the leads take them,” The Roseville Police Department said in a social media post.
Officials said the case has been submitted to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office for review of a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge.
