Sacramento police arrested a man who was initially detained and now faces a homicide charge in a late night stabbing earlier this week at McClatchy Park.

Maximus Morgan, 21, of Sacramento, was first detained at the scene as a person of interest in the homicide investigation. He was later arrested on suspicion of homicide in the deadly stabbing, the Sacramento Police Department announced Wednesday in a news release.

Morgan was being held without bail Wednesday at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He’s scheduled to appear Thursday afternoon for his arraignment in Sacramento Superior Court.

The stabbing was initially reported as an assault with a weapon shortly before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at McClatchy Park, in the 3500 block of Fifth Avenue in Sacramento’s Central Oak Park neighborhood.

Officers arrived at the park and found a man with at least one stab wound, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name and age after his family has been notified.

The department’s homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the stabbing investigation, collecting evidence and questioning witnesses. Police said the circumstances that led to the deadly stabbing remained under investigation.

The Police Department did not release any further details about the stabbing.
