El Dorado County sheriff's officials say the case of two people whose remains were found in a burned residence in Garden Valley is being treated as a homicide and arson investigation.
Deputies responded about 11 a.m. Sept. 13 to assist the Garden Valley Fire Department on a wildland fire in the 4600 block of Highway 193. While searching the area, it was determined that a residence had burned.
The El Dorado County coroner confirmed that the remains of two people were located inside the burned residence. Sheriff’s officials said the Coroner’s Office has sent samples of the remains to the California Department of Justice for DNA processing in an attempt to identify the individuals. A possible third set of remains also was located within the burned residence, but is still in the early stage of being examined, sheriff’s officials said.
The Vallejo Times Herald reported that the residence belonged to a missing Benicia family. According to the newspaper, Adam Buchanan, his son 7-year-old son Gavin and Gavin’s mother Molly McAfee were declared missing following the fire.
