Sacramento has gone three weeks without rainfall, 21 days of high pressure systems preventing Pacific storms from doing what they do best.
Instead of ground-soaking rain in the Valley and fluffy white stuff in the Sierra, the weather has been marked by day after day of mostly cloudless skies. The dry weather has produced some wonderfully warm days, but has done nothing to end the lingering drought.
The last time it rained in Sacramento was Christmas Eve when 0.08 inches fell, the final precipitation for a rainy month. Total rainfall in December was 7.63 inches. Normal for December in Sacramento is 3.48 inches.
January is usually the wettest month on Sacramento’s calendar. A total of 3.97 inches falls on average.
After nearly half a month, not a drop has fallen into the Sacramento rain bucket. Could January finish completely dry?
The National Weather Service forecast for the next seven days looks parched. Also, temperatures are expected to be far above normal, peaking at 67 degrees on Martin Luther King Day on Monday.
Total rainfall for the season in Sacramento stands at 9.84 inches, which is 107 percent of average for the season to mid-January.
