Detectives with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department believe that a 51-year-old female found dead Friday morning in the American River was killed within the 24 hours before her body was recovered.
The woman, found shortly after 10 a.m. near the Guy West bicycle and footbridge, had trauma to her upper body, detectives said.
The woman’s name has not been released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, pending notification of next of kin.
Sacramento police originally responded to the river site Friday morning. On Saturday, officials said their investigation led them to a possible crime scene on the levee near Rogue River Drive in Sacramento.
That site is in the Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction, prompting the involvement of Sacramento County investigators.
Soon after the woman’s body was recovered by firefighters, law enforcement officials said they believed the death was not consistent with drowning.
