Construction begins on 100 cabins for homeless. What will Sacramento County site include?
Construction has begun on a Sacramento County shelter site meant to house 125 homeless people.
The first “Stay Safe Community” — located at 8144 Florin Road and Power Inn Road — was approved by the county Board of Supervisors on June 8, containing 100 “Pallet cabins” for both single and double accommodation. The site will offer temporary housing and services meant to help get the tenants into permanent housing.
“This is an important first step in implementing Safe Stay communities throughout the county,” said Supervisor Patrick Kennedy, who represents south Sacramento and portions of Elk Grove. “This project will ensure people experiencing homelessness in the area will be put in a stable environment and are connected to services to help get their lives in order. We are fully committed to making this and other Safe Stay communities a success for our neighborhoods, business districts and our homeless neighbors.”
The community will have a communal eating area providing food, around-the-clock security, case management services, storage units for possessions that won’t fit in cabins and a pet relief area.
The cabin construction is meant to take 10 days, with utility installation taking months afterward. Officials say the county expects to start welcoming guests sometime in the fall.
The site will be occupied by those who live within nearby neighborhoods, providing “direct relief to the community” and “local and dignified shelter in an area the guest is familiar with” a news release says.
