A crash involving a big rig has closed Highway 99 Monday, Dec. 30, 2019, near Live Oak, authorities say.

A fatal crash involving a big rig closed both directions of traffic on Highway 99 for hours on Monday north of Yuba City, according to Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol.

Highway 99 was closed southbound at Clark Road and northbound at Paseo Road for more than four hours, from about 9:20 a.m. to just after 1:20 p.m., according to Caltrans and the CHP.

The crash was reported as a head-on collision between a semitruck and pickup truck shortly after 8:45 a.m., according to a news release by the CHP Yuba-Sutter Office.

The driver of a 2000 GMC pickup truck was traveling north on Highway 99 when his vehicle crossed over into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2014 Peterbilt semitruck near McDonald Avenue, according to the news release.

The GMC driver, later identified as 40-year-old Jeremy Barrington of Live Oak, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. The big-rig driver, a Turlock man, suffered minor facial lacerations and declined medical transport.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision, but the big-rig driver has not been arrested, according to the news release.

The crash occurred just south of Live Oak, which is about 10 miles north of Yuba City. CHP, Sutter County Sheriff’s and Sutter County Fire Department personnel have responded to the scene.
