Tesla put in pit of water after it keeps bursting into flames, California fire crew says

A white Tesla burst into flames — then it kept reigniting at a California wrecking yard, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to a wrecking yard in Sacramento and found the car engulfed in flames, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said in a June 11 Facebook post.

A video shows thick plumes of smoke billowing from the damaged vehicle.

The car had been involved in a crash three weeks prior and had “major damage,” fire officials said. It was sitting at the wrecking yard to be dismantled.

When crews tried to put out the blaze with water, it reignited and kept off-gassing from the battery compartment, fire officials said.

Firefighters turned the car on its side to access the battery underneath it, but they still couldn’t extinguish the flames.

Eventually, firefighters and workers at the wrecking yard created a pit, placed the vehicle in it and filled it with water, officials said.

The battery compartment was submerged in water, and the flames went out.

Firefighters said the pit helped reduce the amount of water they needed.

There were no injuries. This was the first Tesla fire that firefighters have seen, officials said.
