After finishing up her soap operas, a great-grandmother in Maryland hit the lottery jackpot.

The woman, a resident of Upper Marlboro, purchased her winning ticket, a $6 Powerball ticket at a 7-Eleven on Feb. 27, according to a news release from the Maryland Lottery.

The next day, after she’d watched her daytime dramas, she rifled through her purse and got the ticket while seated at her kitchen table.

Upon seeing the winning numbers — indicating she’d won $50,000 — she couldn’t believe her eyes.

“I got my magnifying glass out,” she told Maryland Lottery. Even after confirming the numbers, she was still in disbelief.

The woman, a retired government employee, then drove to a nearby store and double-checked her winning numbers with the clerk, who told her to head straight home and keep the ticket safe.

“I started rubbing my eyes,” she told Maryland Lottery, “I said, ‘This is crazy!’”

She plans to use some of the prize money to replace her roof and pay bills. She will give some of it to her son as well, according to the release.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
