A few weeks ago, on her way home from a long work day, a Maryland woman made a quick stop at her favorite coffee shop for a latte.

When she got to the store though, the 60-year-old learned that the machine was broken, according to a May 4 news release from Maryland Lottery officials. Instead of going straight home though, the woman made another stop and picked up a few things from 99 Ranch Market in Gaithersburg.

That’s when she noticed the store’s lottery vending machine, she told officials.

“I had $9 left over, so I purchased four $1 tickets and one $5 ticket,” she said, per the release.

The lottery player left the store and took her tickets home. As she started working on her $5 Gold X20 ticket, she “just kept scratching and matching,” she told officials.

After uncovering a 20x multiplier, the lottery player realized she had won a $50,000 top prize, according to officials.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she told officials. “I was just jumping, screaming and clapping.”

The winner got so excited, that she fainted, officials said.

“All of a sudden I was on the kitchen floor,” she told officials.

It wasn’t long until she was woken up by kisses from her dogs, the woman told officials. When she had calmed down a bit, she called her husband, who was out of town.

“When I got home, I just stared at the ticket,” her husband told officials. “It really took a second for it to sink in.”

The couple said they plan to use their prize to take a trip to Dubai and pay some bills.

Gaithersburg is about 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.
