When a 60-year-old lottery player got a phone call telling him he’d won a huge jackpot prize, he didn’t believe it.

“I was skeptical because I thought it was a scam call,” the man told officials with the Michigan Lottery.

But as soon as he got off that call, he received an email about the $538,958 Monthly Second Chance Progressive Jackpot prize, according to a May 22 news release from the Michigan Lottery.

“And that’s when I knew it was real,” the Kent County man, who chose to remain anonymous, said. “I was extremely excited and shared the news with everyone I know!”

The man was randomly selected for the prize during the May 10 drawing, according to the release. He earned entries for the drawing by playing eligible instant games on MichiganLottery.com.

“I knew I was earning entries when playing the Monthly Jackpot Progressive games, but I am not a lucky person, so I never thought I would win,” the player told lottery officials.

He plans to use his jackpot winnings to pay off his home and save, according to the release.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
