A Maryland dad recently brought home lottery tickets for his wife and two sons — and it paid off big.

The family scratched their Money Bag Multiplier tickets together, according to an Aug. 2 Maryland Lottery news release. That’s when one of the family’s sons saw his prize.

“I saw a $1,000 prize. I was surprised and then I saw the 50X, and I was like, ‘No way!’” the 18-year-old told lottery officials. “I went to my dad and I said, ‘I think I won $50,000.’”

His mom used the lottery app on her phone and quickly confirmed her son’s prize, officials said.

“I was shocked at first,” he told officials.

The winner will use his prize to help pay his parents’ bills before buying himself something fun, and he plans to keep his win a secret, officials said.

The family bought their tickets at Benfield Wine & Spirits in Millersville, which is about 20 miles south of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
