A retired woman’s time spent ”studying” the Maryland lottery website finally paid off.

The lottery player and her husband get specific when picking out lottery tickets, even creating a “shopping list” to make sure they have the best chances of winning.

Scanning the Maryland Lottery website, the woman from Upper Marlboro in Prince George’s County says she looks for lottery tickets that have the most “top-prize winning tickets remaining,” according to lottery officials.

She carefully selected a $20 ticket after seeing eight big prizes remaining. She’s now taking home one of those prizes worth $50,000.

“When I scratched it at home, I handed it to my husband and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this,’” she recounted to lottery officials. “He told me, ‘You always said you were going to hit a big one. You finally did it.’”

The couple will put the winnings toward “several long-overdue” home improvement projects, but the woman also has bigger goals ahead.

She “assured Lottery officials that she’d soon return with a $1 million winning ticket,” according to a May 17 news release.

Upper Marlboro is about a 20-mile drive southeast of Washington, D.C.
