‘Cuddle bug’ pup spent years in NY shelter — until first overnight trip. Meet Riley
After three years in a New York shelter, Riley the sweet pup finally got a taste of what life could be like outside her longtime residence.
Riley took a brief vacation from her time at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands and enjoyed an entire night out, which included love, treats and cuddles.
“Riley got the opportunity to have her first overnight trip out of the shelter since arriving here over 3 years ago and she did excellent!” the shelter said in a July 30 Facebook post. ”Sometimes the transition from a shelter to a house environment can be intimidating but Riley took to homelife in a snap!”
Riley was able to spend some much-needed time with a human chaperon at a home for the evening.
“We had a lot of fun and it was so nice to see her relaxed! When we first arrived, I sat with her outside and she explored the area on her own. We spent a lot of time outside, and she took a few naps in the sun,” the chaperon, identified as Bree, said in the post.
“I have never seen her as relaxed as she is when she’s outside. She was nervous when entering the house for the first time and stayed by my side. By the next day, she got more confident inside, exploring areas on her own and playing with her toys. We went on a long walk around the property, and she constantly had her nose to the ground.”
Riley even witnessed wildlife at play, a potential first for her.
“She was a big cuddle bug at night and in the early morning, licking my face any chance she could,” Bree said.
Riley is available for adoption.

Menands is located in the Albany area.
