An officer-involved shooting ended with a woman’s body being found in a pickup truck in Missouri, according to officials.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Dec. 8, police in Festus received a report of shots fired, Festus Police Chief Doug Wendel said at a news conference posted on Facebook.

The suspect’s vehicle was found on a highway and police tried to pull him over, but the driver did not stop, officials said. The truck then struck a concrete median and “flipped around.”

“At that point in time, the suspect did step out of the vehicle, wearing body armor, armed, and at that point, officers engaged with him,” Wendel said.

The mandisplayed “multiple weapons” and fired shots, Crystal City Police Chief Chad Helms said at the news conference. Crystal City Police officers were on scene to assistance Festus police.

Officers returned fire at the man, and he was transported “off scene” to be medically treated for multiple gunshot wounds, officials said.

Authorities discovered a dead woman inside the truck who they believe was already dead prior to the incident, Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak said.He described it as a “homicide investigation,” though her cause of death is still being determined.

“They open up the door and her feet kind of, like, swayed out of the car, they had to push them back in and that’s when they put the sheet over her,” a nearby worker told KSDK.

Officials believe the man and woman came to Missouri from another state.

Police have not released the name of the man or the woman.

Crystal City is about a 40-mile drive southwest of St. Louis.
