A lottery player hit the jackpot — and celebrated with a big purchase.

After the woman discovered her lottery ticket was worth $500,000, she put a down payment on a new house, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.

“It was a blessing,” the prize winner told lottery officials in a Feb. 7 news release.

The woman, who wasn’t identified in the release, got richer after stopping at a Publix supermarket in Charleston. While at the grocery store, she spent $10 on a ticket for the Cash King scratch-off game.

It turns out, the woman’s ticket beat 1-in-1.5 million odds to score the game’s top prize. She kept $347,500 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.

It’s not the first time a lottery player scored a life-changing prize at a South Carolina grocery store. Another Publix shopper thought she won $500 before realizing she was getting a much bigger windfall, McClatchy News reported in 2023.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
