As a Maryland woman browsed a convenience store, a clerk suggested she try her luck at a new lottery game.

The Eastern Shore woman heeded the Fruitland clerk’s advice and bought a $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off ticket, which debuted just three days earlier, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Feb. 13 news release.

Turns out, it’s a good thing she did.

“Let this be a big win,” the woman recalled telling herself as she scratched her $50 ticket.

With each number revealed, the woman “grew more confident of ‘a big win,’” lottery officials said.

The woman’s ticket matched 10 numbers worth $10,000 each, leaving her with a $100,000 prize, according to lottery officials.

The woman called her family and shared the news of her big win, lottery officials said.

The longtime federal government employee said she doesn’t have any plans for her prize yet, aside from tucking it away in savings.

Fruitland is about a 35-mile drive west of Ocean City on the state’s lower Eastern Shore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
